Behind Closed Doors.  DISC assessments have been copied and imitated more than any other test.  Why?  Because DISC works.  We are the original DISC.  We have seen 24 question tests, 10 question tests, 180 question tests, carbon paper tests, animal tests, color tests, and every other configuration imitation possible. Look-alikes have drawn their own graphs and circle models and called them circumplex survey, DISC-in-the-Round, 360 analysis, four factor models, five factor models, iDISC, eDisc, the newest knock-off "name of the day".  They will continue to do so.  Evaluate carefully.

Is it possible to build a new and better DISC assessment?
 One would hope so, otherwise we would be back in 1928 forever.  We believe that the Everything DISC Profile family for WorkPlace, Management and Sales, using the established foundation of DISC Classic personal profiles test assessments, are the best DISC profiles tests and assessments ever created.  We have 36 years of DISC experience and we know the best assessment.

Did you know that there are TWO very distinct DISC test assessment profiles.  We have had two different DISC assessments for three years and most are unaware of this. One has 28 questions, one has 79 questions, graphs vs. circles, and they do NOT mix and match because they are not even the same test.  The two distinct DISC product families both use the DISC model.  They are called the Everything DISC Applications product family and the DISC Classic product family.

ANSWER:  DISC Classic 2 PLUS (PLUS, not DISC Classic 2.0) is most frequently used.  HOWEVER, the new WorkPlace Profile may become a strong contender within the next year.

Remember, DISC alone is not a hiring tool as it does not measure job fit, job fitness, or success.  It is only part of the hiring process and may not be used as an elimination tool.  Use it to get more data.

Which DISC to Use?

Confusion starts because there are TWO separate and distinct DISC tests

  • You cannot mix and match the DISC results, tests, trainer kits of these two families of DISC language assessments because they are not even the same test, although both families use the DISC model. Profiles and Materials on the left will NOT work with profiles and materials in the right column.

  • DISC Classic is older.  Everything DISC is newer and more valid for specific applications.

DISC Classic Paper Profile Tests

Used only as a last resort when online profiles are not possible.  Difficulty in interpretation is the biggest draw back as well as inaccurate scoring and graphing.  All scoring is manual.  New users have difficulty. Paper profiles were the foundation product but were largely replaced by online tests about 15 years ago.

High "D" people are described as demanding, forceful, egocentric, strong willed, driving, determined, ambitious, aggressive, and pioneering. Low D scores describe those who are conservative, low keyed, cooperative, calculating, undemanding, cautious, mild, agreeable, modest and peaceful.

Influence (Inducement in Marston's time):  People with High I scores influence others through talking and activity and tend to be emotional. They are described as convincing, magnetic, political, enthusiastic, persuasive, warm, demonstrative, trusting, and optimistic. Those with Low I scores influence more by data and facts, and not with feelings. They are described as reflective, factual, calculating, skeptical, logical, suspicious, matter of fact, pessimistic, and critical.

Steadiness (Submission in William Moulton Marston's time): People with High S styles scores want a steady pace, security, and don't like sudden change. Low S intensity scores are those who like change and variety.  High S persons are calm,  relaxed, patient, possessive, predictable, deliberate, stable, consistent, and tend to be unemotional and poker faced. People with Low S scores are described as restless, demonstrative, impatient, eager, or even impulsive.

Conscientiousness (Compliance in Marston's time):  Persons with High C styles adhere to rules, regulations, and structure. They like to do quality work and do it right the first time.  High C people are careful, cautious, exacting, neat, systematic, diplomatic, accurate, tactful. Those with Low C scores challenge the rules and want independence and are described as self-willed, stubborn, opinionated, unsystematic, arbitrary, and careless with details.

A Brief History:  We provided the basic definitions to Disc Profile Wikipedia. The DISC Classic Profile was called the DISC Personal Profile System 2800 Series for almost 36 years.  We're not the new kid on the block.  We're the original, the classy "classic".  We're the folks they make the "look-alikes" from.  In the 1990's we could provide DISC reports with software.  In 2003, the EPIC online internet website system changed the delivery system completely of DISC reports and made access to them available to everyone WITHOUT SOFTWARE!  The DISC Profile for online assessment inventory personality tests and behavioral profiling is based on the original work by William Moulton Marston in 1928.  What is a Profile?  A Profile in training or education terms, means a survey, testing, instrument, assessment, inventory, or learning tool.  DISC provides a nonjudgmental language for exploring behavioral issues. It helps people explore behavior across four primary dimensions: Dominance, Influence, Steadiness, Conscientiousness.  It has for over 36 years now!
