Understanding DiSC profiles

Have you just been asked to take the DiSC profile test? Or to administer the DiSC profile? We can answer a few common questions about this popular personality assessment here.

Why is DiSC used?

Many businesses and organizations use DiSC profiles as a tool in creating a positive working environment. For example, a dental office used it to highlight ways for their teams to work more effectively together. They know more about how each team member prefers to act in the world, what motivates them, and what might cause them stress. They have a shared and non-judgmental vocabulary for discussing issues and a better sense of what their office culture is and what they’d like it to be. An office might all take a Workplace or Classic profile. If they were really committed to growing their business, they might all take Work of Leaders.

Another example is from a  construction company. Whenever someone new is hired, that employee is asked to take the profile. Profiles are shared and the on-boarding process is sped up. The new employee in accounting might learn that the boss is an i and tends to judge people by their openness, social skills, and enthusiasm. And the boss might learn that the new accountant is a C and is more concerned with accuracy and objective processes. Together they’ll see that each of these traits is necessary, bringing flexibility and depth to the organization. Each gains some insight into how they might want to adapt their preferred styles when working directly with each other.

A real estate firm determines that their agents need training to be more effective in sales. They use DiSC Sales to help their agents and administrative staff learn about how to read the buying styles of their clients. They learn how to adapt their own sales styles to address their clients’ preferred pace, relationship needs, or areas of stress.

Promotions are often a reason an organization chooses to use DiSC Management. Becoming a new manager or managing a new team can be a stressful experience for all involved. DiSC can make it easier to quickly learn about your own management style and, if you make use of Comparison Reports, about your direct reports.

How is DiSC administered?

The test is very simple to take online. The Classic and Everything DiSC profiles take less than 15 minutes to complete. There are no right or wrong answers. The average person’s profile tends to stay fairly consistent over time, but the accuracy of the test has been improved over the years so a new Everything DiSC profile will be more complete (and more memorable.)

The scoring and reporting are done electronically or in a few simple steps for an all-paper version. The administrator of the profile does not need to be certified.  If you need a print version, DiSC Classic is available–even in languages other than English.

Sample DiSC profile reports are available online and will give you a good sense of what is covered and how they might be used.

What do the letters D, i, S, and C mean?

DiSC theory looks at four basic styles to describe how people approach their work and relationships. These are represented by the four letters. The assessment goes much deeper than this, of course, but a quick overview of each style can be read at the links below.

Try Everything DiSC for Less: 2012 Migration Program

Have you been using DiSC Classic, but have wanted to try or move your company to an Everything DiSC product? Now is the time. During 2012 if you have completed a DiSC Classic online report (DiSC 1.0, 2.0, Plus or PPSS) you can migrate to Everything DiSC for less.

Why upgrade to Everything DiSC?

Everything DiSC Products are the newest DiSC Products.  They have several differences compared to DiSC Classic.

The Everything DiSC questionnaire is on a rating scale vs the DiSC Classic using forced choice.  With Everything DiSC your scoring uses 8 scales as compared to the 4 scales with DiSC Classic, making it a more precise assessment.  For a complete comparison see Which DiSC to Use.

There are many benefits with Everything DiSC including FREE comparison reports.  The report is more personal, relevant and has a richer narrative. Your results are displayed on a circle, which is more intuitive and memorable.  The shading of the circle better illustrates how we are all D, i, S, C.  The Everything DiSC reports are all application focused.

Migration offer

We are offering a way for you to migrate to the Everything DiSC family for less from now until December 31, 2012.  All Everything DiSC reports will be 10 credits less if you have already completed a DiSC Classic report.  As an example a Everything DiSC Workplace which is 15 credits will only be 5 credits or a Everything DiSC Sales profile which is 25 credits will only be 15 credits.

We’ve created a new bundle of EPIC credits to make this offer even better. You can now purchase just 150 EPIC credits. So if you’ve already completed a DiSC Classic profile online, those 150 credits will make available 30 Everything DiSC Workplace profiles migrations (or 10 Everything DiSC Sales or Everything DiSC Management.) Migrating 30 people to Everything DiSC will make comparison reports available for them all. And it will reinforce learning from previous DiSC trainings.

The process is easy…

Common questions about DiSC profiles

Can your profile change over time?

In general, the average person’s profile tends to stay fairly consistent over time. While small differences in results from one time taking the assessment to the next may occur, major shifts in style are unlikely. However, if it has been two years or more since someone last took the profile, we recommend taking it again to ensure the most accurate and up-to-date information.

DiSC styles and Age explains more about differences in styles as we age.

Do specific professions, cultures, or nationalities trend towards one dimension or another?

You may have noticed that you see more of one dimension over another when you do trainings with different types of groups. This does occur, but the distribution of successful people in each dimension is still pretty evenly distributed.

For example, people in sales tend to be show up in the I quadrant, but they also also found in the other three. For more information see DiSC Styles and Occupations. Inscape Publishing has done research on this question.
Regarding geography and culture, Mark Scullard, a DiSC researcher had this to say recently in a LinkedIn forum:

We don’t see much difference in DiSC results based on region of the US. In fact, I had just done a comparison using some representative states (CA, DC, FL, IA, NY, OH, TX, CO, GA) and found very few differences. There was a very slight tendency for results like- more S styles in Ohio or more D styles in Georgia, but these differences are so small that they have virtually no practical implications.

With regard to ethnic difference, we can also say that we don’t see any differences based on the traditionally defined five US categories. In fact, when we look at a large sample of Australians (living in Australia) who have taken the US profile, they look the same as the US population. I would only expect to see a difference in your sample with a large Latin-American population if participants are not very fluent in English. In such a case, the distribution of scores shouldn’t change, but the precision will drop a little.

You might also want to read How many D’s are there in the population? where the following is noted:

A person is only D relative to the people around her. A person is only C relative to the people around her. For example, imagine that we a have a plane full of S style folks and the plane crashes on a remote island. We, of course, would have an island full of very, very polite people. But imagine that isolated community of people 10 years later, once they got to know each other really well. Some of those people would now probably be considered D’s – because they are more dominant relative to everyone else. If DiSC is going to be useful, it must help us understand our individual differences, not what everyone has in common.

Doesn’t DiSC pigeon-hole people?

You might have heard someone dismiss someone’s action or comments with a remark like “She’s a D, what do you expect?” Assigning labels and rationalizing poor behavior is not what DiSC profiles are about. For one thing not all Ds behave or respond in the same way. There is diversity in each dimension as you can see if you compare where someone’s dot falls in the D quadrant.

DiSC was designed as a way of helping people better understand another person’s preferences and priorities. It’s a tool to help each of us adapt our preferred, natural behavioral style to meet the needs of another, in a healthy manner.

DiSC profile questionaire

People often wonder just what the DiSC questionnaire or survey looks like. You can see examples below.

DiSC Classic tests

This is an example of one of the questions you (or your participants) are asked to fill in. You’ll see 28 boxes containing four words each. In each box, you’re asked to choose one that is most like you and one that is least like you. Consequently, you’ll review a total of 112 words.

Everything DiSC tests

This type of questionnaire is easier to take, especially for anyone who isn’t a native speaker of English. A total of 79 questions need to be answered, but it still takes only about 10 to 15 minutes. It uses a rating scale which is much easier for most people.

If you’re not sure which assessment you want to use with your staff or clients, see Which DiSC® to Use? or 10 Reasons to use Everything DiSC instead of DiSC Classic.

If you’re curious about what the final reports look like, see these examples:

The free comparison report is available only with the Everything DiSC profiles.
